How to use the directory and apply
1. Identify the need
Choose a category or search for the item, activity or support you need. Read the geographic coverage carefully. National schemes can be available to West Yorkshire families; other regional trusts may not be.
2. Read eligibility and availability
Check the child’s age, diagnosis or needs criteria, financial rules and application status. Some routes do not require a formal diagnosis. Others require specific medical evidence or disability benefits.
“Enquiry available” is not a guarantee of funding. A fund may have a live contact page while new awards are restricted.
3. Start with statutory services where appropriate
For essential equipment, communication support, home adaptations or care, ask the relevant NHS, council or school team about an assessment. Many charities want to know whether statutory funding is available.
4. Gather the evidence requested
- A professional report describing the child’s needs and why the requested help is suitable.
- Relevant disability benefit, income and household finance evidence.
- Supplier quotations, an access assessment or a proposed holiday budget.
- Statutory service decisions, where requested.
- Consent and referral information for professional-only funds.
Each fund has its own checklist. An EHCP, diagnosis letter and DLA award are not interchangeable forms of evidence.
5. Use the correct application route
Some organisations accept family applications. Others require a school, social worker, health professional or registered charity to refer you. Follow the official link in the listing.
6. Wait for written approval before spending
Check whether payment goes to you, a supplier or a referrer, and whether you need to cover a balance. Most charities will not reimburse an item already purchased or a holiday already booked.
For equipment, confirm clinical suitability, delivery, insurance and maintenance. For a holiday, discuss accessibility, sensory needs, personal care, food and travel costs.
