Special schools, resourced provisions, alternative education and specialist post-16 settings across West Yorkshire, with Bradford and Leeds first. Find planning guidance, local advice and templates to help explain what your child needs.
Sources checked 13 October 2026. School register snapshot: 12 October 2026. Listings show registered provision, not vacancies, a recommendation or confirmation that a placement will suit a child.
Which education plan does your child need?
SEN Support: help before or without an EHCP
Start with the school’s SENCO or SENDCO. Ask for a written record of needs, agreed support, measurable outcomes, who will provide it and when it will be reviewed. Schools commonly use an Individual Education Plan (IEP), SEN Support Plan, My Support Plan or an Assess–Plan–Do–Review record. These school plans are not EHCPs. You can discuss support while assessments or a diagnosis are still being explored.
An EHCP is a statutory plan for eligible children and young people up to 25 whose education needs require more support. It records assessed needs and provision; it does not guarantee support continues until 25 in every case. Parents can request an EHC needs assessment from their council, and young people aged 16–25 can request one themselves.
The usual assessment-to-final-plan deadline is 20 weeks, with legal exceptions. Seek advice about delays, the draft plan, school preference and annual reviews. Ask that provision is clear about what is delivered, how often and by whom.
Other plans that may work alongside education support
Individual healthcare plan: school arrangements for a medical condition, medication, equipment and emergencies, agreed with relevant healthcare professionals.
Communication or sensory passport: preferences, triggers and adjustments to help adults understand the child.
Transition plan: practical preparation for a new school, college or adulthood; EHCP reviews from Year 9 should consider preparation for adulthood.
Personal Education Plan (PEP): education planning for a looked-after child, through the designated teacher and Virtual School.
Ask the school which documents it uses and how they fit together. A health plan or passport does not replace an EHCP or a clinical treatment plan.
SEMH describes a broad area of special educational need; there is no single national statutory document called an “SEMH plan”. Support might be recorded in SEN Support, an EHCP, a pastoral plan or a jointly agreed mental-health care plan.
If anxiety, distress, trauma or difficulty attending school is affecting learning, ask the SENCO about assessment, adjustments, a trusted adult, calm spaces and an agreed review. Explore educational psychology, school mental-health support teams or health services where appropriate. A child’s distress should be understood in context rather than assumed to be deliberate misbehaviour.
Where school attendance is affected, ask about emotionally based school avoidance (EBSA) guidance, suitable education and a coordinated return/support plan. Do not assume home education or a reduced timetable is the only option.
SENDIASS services provide impartial information about SEND, education decisions and the assessment process. Parents, carers and young people can contact them directly; ask about accessible information and help preparing for meetings.
For help exploring funding or completing forms, you can also contact Archie George Foundation. Formal education decisions remain with the council and statutory services.
Adapt examples to the child and discuss them with the school or adviser. A template alone does not establish eligibility or replace assessment. Keep copies of requests, evidence, meeting notes and review dates.
West Yorkshire school and provision finder
177 registered settings: special schools, declared resourced provisions/SEN units, alternative provision and specialist post-16 institutions. Every open establishment meeting these register categories across the five councils is included. Some satellite classes are part of a parent school rather than separately registered; use the council links for site-level details.
This is an official register snapshot, not an admissions list. Ages shown are the establishment’s registered range, which may differ from a specialist base’s intake. Needs recorded in the register may be incomplete. Contact the setting and council about suitability, funding, vacancies and current sites.
Specialist base places are separately assessed; joining the mainstream school does not automatically give access to the base. Ask your council SEND team.

Additional council-listed provision and sites
Leeds also lists Roundhay School in its resourced-provision directory. Kirklees lists Old Bank Academy for cognition and learning in its ARP directory. These council listings supplement the register-filtered list above; confirm the current specialist offer with the council.
Wakefield’s 2024 provision plan (PDF) also lists assessment, medical and specialist centres including Early Years Assessment Centre, Forest Wood, Thornes, Woodlands, Wrenthorpe and The Limes. This is older planning information: ask the council to confirm their current operation, referral routes and names.
Before choosing a setting
Ask how staff support your child’s communication, sensory, learning, medical and emotional needs.
Discuss toilets, personal care, hoists, equipment, transport, therapy and school-day arrangements.
Ask which site, base or pathway is proposed and what learning with mainstream peers looks like.
Arrange a visit where possible and involve your child in a way that suits them.
Confirm the placement and funding route with the council before agreeing to fees.
Sources and scope
The school list is taken from the Department for Education’s public establishment download, dated 12 October 2026, under the Open Government Licence. It includes open and open-but-proposed-to-close records. Closed and not-yet-open schools are excluded. Independent schools are included where registered as special schools; other independent providers and council-commissioned offers can be checked through the Local Offers and register.
We preserve register classifications and provider-supplied contacts, rather than claiming to inspect schools or certify every website. Blank or incomplete fields are labelled. Specialist bases and satellite sites can change faster than national records.
